We all have bad days

Sleepless nights, missed deadlines, mountains of paperwork, dealing with an unrelenting headache, a record number of paper cuts in a day, mistakes here and there? Yes, we all have those days when we feel like nothing seems to be going as planned and there is one crisis after another. As any manager running a department, all troubles and issues fall on your desk. I work in a laboratory, where if one machine breaks down then it’s the end of Jenga™ – so I have my fair share of horrible days.

Yes, life can be an overbearing master. It can be challenging to deal with, and at times, it’s full of cynicism. You need to rid yourself of all that negative energy by putting attention to your physical, mental and emotional well-being.

10 ways to unwind after a long day

Relax and Unwind

Relaxing is the ultimate way to reset our system, and each one of us has our unique ways to accomplish a state of tranquil and peace. When I am plagued with anxiety and worry, my go-to remedy would be my “personal self-care kit” and do as instructed. This kit is basically a collection of things and activities that help me calm my mind and preserve what little positive energy I have left for that day – and even add more.

My Self Care Kit

Talk it out

I always try to think positive as much as I can. However, there are days where you just want to have someone to be there and be your sounding board and let your opinions angle off to a fresh perspective. Someone who you can quickly vent your frustrations out.

You can talk it all out, or you can just write it down in your journal. I am not much of a writer, I’m more of a talker, but lately, I find joy in writing down my thoughts and feelings – hence, the creation of my blog. It’s easier for me to let go and move forward if I let it out.

Take a long and rejuvenating bath

This, by itself, will always do the trick. If time permits, you have to treat yourself to a long hot rejuvenating bath. I like setting a relaxing ambiance by using salt scrubs and aromatherapy, light my favorite scented candle, put on some relaxing music and just bathe in the wonders of a hot bath. I also like to use bath oil to get that hydrated feel on your skin when you’re done. Such a wonderful feeling!

Meditate

Meditation can do wonders. When you meditate, you release all that tension and ease your scattered thoughts. It empties your mind making you feel more relaxed, at peace and in tune with yourself.

I am not mainly an expert on meditation, but I am working on it. Listening to meditation music and using aromatherapy help me get into a trance and the more I practice it, the easier it is for me to deal with stress and anxiety. Not sure about meditation? There are tons of meditation books you can read and learn from.

Get lost in your books

This is a form of escape for me. I get to be in a different world and just live in there for a moment, and all I have to do is get in my PJs, grab a throw, sip hot chocolate or tea and get lost in my book or my Kindle. How relaxing is that?

Say a little prayer

I always find praying relaxing; it feels like you are talking to a very close friend. When you pray, you are pouring out all your most profound thoughts, longings, and opening yourself to receive enlightenment. It has been a very personal thing, so I say a prayer for strength to overcome my weaknesses and peace of mind.

Sweat it out

To be honest, I seldom do this, but when I do sweat out my frustrations, I feel a lot better. You don’t have to go to the gym, you can do walks or even ride a bike, anything that keeps you moving and maybe sweat a little. I like the long “walks,” it gives me time to think or just get a chance to breathe fresh air – just inhale the future and exhale the past behind.

Create

This might be an unconventional way to relax and unwind, but it does work. If you’re like me, who is fond of arts and crafts, then a “hobby” would be an excellent way to relieve stress and have a little fun in the process. Indulging in a hobby that lets you work or create in details can help calm an over-thinking mind. It serves as an outlet to pour out all that energy from anxiety and restlessness.

Clean and Organize

A messy environment can add more stress and anxiety, so try to clean and organize if you can. I make sure to straighten things around and make my bed at least. Cleaning is a good way to distract that overactive mind, it helps you calm down by focusing on to something other than your scattered thoughts.

Disengage

Do not let your work and social media add to your frustrations, so turn off your phone, stay away from emails and just focus on yourself. If you bring your work home or consistently browse through social media, you tend to absorb all the negativity. So leave it behind for a moment and just connect with yourself.

Treat Yourself

Ahhhhh!!! My favorite part. It doesn’t have to be expensive pieces of jewelry, shoes or bags, all it takes for me to feel like a million bucks is a gentle, relaxing massage and eat my favorite meal; then go home, put on some comfy clothes and bask in the goodness of doing nothing. Don’t go stingy on this one; you deserve to treat yourself once in a while.

A Quick Fix?

In this day and age, when everyone wants to find a “quick fix” for everything; setting aside time to relax and unwind seems like a big waste of our precious limited time. However, it is vital to find a moment to take a break and focus on rejuvenating yourself. A “quick fix” will never be enough when it comes to preserving your emotional, physical and mental health.
