We all have evening routines, but if it only involves washing your face before hitting the hay, then you’re missing out on the best possible way to nourish and recuperate your skin. When we sleep, our body repairs itself making it the best time to dump nutrients to our face and give it its much-needed boost.
There are tons of ways to can help your skin overnight depending on your skin type. As for me, I have combination skin where my T-zone is a little oily, and my cheeks are desert dry. So I do both, hydrating and nourishing.
As I’ve said a couple of times, my skin is nowhere from being perfect. To counter that, I follow these ten steps at night – DILIGENTLY – to help improve the overall appearance of my skin.
First things first! I make sure to wash my hands before doing any steps. This process prevents the introduction of bacteria to my already tired and yucky skin after a long day.
Step 1: Oil Based Cleanser
During evenings, I use an oil-based cleanser to remove dirt and makeup. I don’t usually wear makeup but when I do I make sure to use an oil-based cleanser to wash them off – this doubles up as my makeup remover. Perfect for my combination skin, because they don’t just clean and remove debris they also hydrate and moisturize.
Step 2: Water Based Cleanser
Double cleansing is the way to go! I use a gentle facial cleanser for this step. This helps get rid of the residual impurities left from makeups and environmental factors giving me that additional cleaning boost.
Step 3: Exfoliate
I do this once or twice a week as I have sensitive skin (you have to give your skin time to recuperate). A gentle liquid exfoliator, a bead-based product or a gentle scrub will do the trick. This will help remove the dead skin cells faster and aides in better product absorption.
Step 4: Toner
Applying toner after you cleanse and exfoliate is very helpful for your skin. Toners are meant to restore the skin’s pH levels and hydrate it as well. I have opted out of using alcohol-based toners a long time ago; they were very harsh on my sensitive skin – stick to toners that are natural and alcohol-free.
Step 5: Essence or Skin Conditioner
I like adding this step to my evening routine; I found that by doing so, my skin is more hydrated and brighter. An essence or Skin Conditioner gives that needed boost of hydration they also aid in skin repair and restoration.
Step 6: Serums and Oils
This can get tricky; some formulas are targeted to specific problems or areas of your face. So please be careful when choosing one. I use hydrating serums and those that have vitamin C. As for oils, I like to use those that have anti-aging properties. Take note, serums and oils are concentrated, so a little goes a long way.
Step 7: Mask
The sheet mask is by far my favorite. I usually use a sheet mask every other day and a mud mask once or twice a week. I pick those that are suited for combination skin and have deep cleansing properties; on cold season, I choose those hydrating sheet masks.

Step 8: Eye Cream
The skin around the eyes needs hydration the most. They have minimal sweat glands, and for this, they need help; this is also one reason why we see more wrinkles around this area. I use eye creams that have a little retinol but a lot of moisturizing properties.
Step 9: Moisturize
Next step is moisturizing. It helps moisturize your skin when it’s dry and prevent it from drying out. There are tons of moisturizers available, choose those that best work for your skin. Personally, I prefer to have two (2) types of creams, one with retinol and one that is purely for skin hydration.
Step 10: Lip Care
Don’t forget your lips! I don’t do lip scrub every single night; I do it three times a week or more during the colder season. However, I use lip balm or lip essence every night. This will help protect and moisturize my lip – waking up to plump and softer lips is always a good thing.
